(I wrote you this message earlier but couldn't log in, anyway, I'm test-posting it again tonight.)
Thank you for this inspiring article. It made my day! (: Sometimes, people tend to think their problems are always much worse than everybody else's, until they come across a story like yours. You truly are the epitome of successful perseverance. There really is no excuse for anybody to not at least try and find a way to win in this industry. I was disheartened myself for a long time not knowing what to do or how to go forward. But now, thanks to you and people like you who unselfishly share their knowledge, experience and wisdom to those of us both new and insecure, I (as well as many kindred souls, I'm sure) can be a bit more confident to face the challenges of the day. I wish you keep posting for as long as you can. Mabuhay ka! (:

Hi Mam Harvey!

I think one of the difficulties of charging is not knowing how much to charge.

I've read through the threads in PiPho wherein newbies (like me) are asking for market rates. Unfortunately, even the experienced photographers couldn't answer the question.

All I could really do is look at what photo labs charge for group shots and follow their rate. Of course, I'd be offering additional value to the client.

If you can give us other tips on pricing, we'd greatly appreciate it.

Hope to see you again soon. (probably in another Manila Zoo event) Hahaha!

Thanks ;)

Hi! Im ali santos. Me and my wife are about to plunge into the business of photography and we are currently eyeing on taking class pictures, graduation portraits and ID's as a start. This would be for both public and private schools.

I believe we already have the equipments needed (2 cam bodies: a 40D and a 400D with flashes) and we already have the templates/samples for class pictures and ids. We wish to start next month.

Currently, im working/planning on the project proposal (contract) that i intend to give to the schools where i intend to offer our services. Is it ok if you could send me a sample of a contract or project proposal? This would include pricing right?
This is my first time to go into the world of business and I really dont know how to create a winning proposal. Thanks a lot and more power!!

PS: me and my wife are learning a lot from your posts.. thanks :)

Agreed. But I think alongside the inescapable technology upgrade is the upgrade of photographic style as well. Or is it more important to be consistent? Do we change our output to look like what's in vogue? Years ago, gritty, urban (ie. grainy, low saturation) photos were the rage, found often in jeans adverts to appeal to the youth market. Then somehow that morphed into the metallic look (high contrast, hard lighting) which still finds itself applied to most fashion magazines nowadays. In short, must technique & technology keep together?

Bravo! A wonderful story on the virtues of "stick-to-itiveness." I'm just wondering about the extra charges against the client for all those hassles. Must have cost them a mint!
